The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence was initiated in 1991 by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University in New Jersey, which is now part of the Rutgers Institute for Women’s Leadership Consortium.

November 25 was selected as the campaign's inaugural day due to the efforts of women's rights advocates who urged the United Nations to recognize this date as a tribute to the victims of gender-based violence. This day commemorates the anniversary of the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic, who were murdered on the orders of dictator Rafael Trujillo. Their story is poignantly depicted in the historical fiction novel "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez, published in 1994.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the elimination of violence against women as a fundamental human right. Following this, on February 7, 2000, the UN formally recognized November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The UN urges collaboration among governments and civil society, including international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to raise awareness and support for this vital issue each year on this date.

2024 dates for 16 Days of Activism are November 25 to December 10.

March 6, 2026
This March, as we honor the trailblazing women who paved the way for our freedom, we must also shine a light on the quiet, courageous battles being fought in homes and hearts right now. For the women and girls navigating the fog of trauma or the weight of relationship abuse, "history" isn't just about the past—it’s about the strength required to change the course of your own future today. At Rebelle With A Cause, we believe that the foundation of any revolution—personal or social—starts with a simple, unwavering truth: Love is Respect. The Barrier to Healing: Stop the Self-Punishment It is a heavy burden to carry the blame for someone else’s choices. Many survivors of abuse find themselves trapped in a cycle of "if onlys"—thinking that if they were smarter, stronger, or better, things would have been different. Sarah Jakes Roberts offers a profound reminder that hits at the core of the recovery process: "We can’t heal while still punishing ourselves." When you punish yourself with guilt or shame, you are essentially continuing the work of the person who hurt you. Healing requires you to lay down the whip. It requires you to look at your reflection and realize that the trauma you experienced is something that happened to you, not something that defines you. Restoring What Was Stolen: The Rebelle Mission Leaving an abusive situation—or even just recognizing that you are in one—is an act of profound bravery. But what happens after the "leaving"? Often, there is a lingering sense of insecurity and a fear that you’ve lost your place in the world. Rebelle With A Cause Inc. is dedicated to filling that gap. Our trauma-informed programs aren't just about "getting by"; they are engineered to: Restore Personal Dignity: Helping you remember that you are worthy of honor and high regard. Build Confidence: Providing the tools to trust your intuition again. Establish Healthy Relationships: Learning the blueprint for what respect actually looks like in practice. Lead Positive Community Change: Turning your survival into a story of leadership. We believe that a woman who has found her voice is the most powerful force for change in any community. Supporting Those in the Fight If you are currently fleeing abuse or supporting someone who is, remember that safety is the first priority, but sovereignty is the goal. Supporting a survivor means offering a "no-judgment zone." It means understanding that her timeline for healing may not match yours, and that the most radical thing you can offer is consistent, respectful presence. Join the Conversation You are not walking this path alone. There is a global sisterhood of "Rebelles" who are reclaiming their dignity and rewriting their stories. Listen & Learn: Tune into Rebelle Stories on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube to hear from women who have walked through the fire and emerged as leaders. Connect with Us: Follow us on Instagram @therebellewithacause for daily inspiration, resources, and community support. This Women’s History Month, let’s make herstory by choosing to love ourselves enough to stop the punishment and start the healing. You are a cause worth fighting for.

In a world that often dismisses beauty as "vanity," Rebelle With A Cause Inc. , sees something different. We see a mirror reflecting a survivor who is learning to recognize herself again. For many survivors of domestic violence and relationship abuse, the "mask" wasn't the makeup—it was the silence. It was the forced smile, the hidden bruises, and the fragments of a personality tucked away to survive. Today, we’re talking about why we use beauty as a catalyst for advocacy and why "getting ready" is often the first step in "getting free." The Psychology of the Mirror When someone undergoes the trauma of abuse, their sense of self-worth is often the first thing targeted. Abuse is designed to make a person feel small, invisible, and powerless. Rebelle’s beauty workshops aren't about "fixing" how a woman looks; they are about restoring how she sees herself. * Autonomy: In a workshop, a survivor chooses her own colors, her own style, and her own routine. After years of being controlled, these small choices are rebellelutionary. • Tactile Healing: The physical act of applying skincare or makeup is a form of "grounding." It forces a connection between the mind and the body—a connection often severed by trauma. • The "Warrior" Effect: J ust as an athlete puts on a uniform, a survivor can use a specific lip color or a sharp eyeliner as their "armor" before a court date, a job interview, or a difficult conversation. From "Covering Up" to "Opening Up" Society often assumes makeup is used to hide. At Rebelle With A Cause, we flip that narrative. "I used to use concealer to hide the marks. Now, I use it because I deserve to look as bright and rested as I feel on the inside." — Rebelle With A Cause Workshop Participant We move from reactive beauty (hiding the pain) to proactive beauty (expressing the soul) . This transition is the bridge to self-advocacy. When a woman feels confident in her reflection, she is more likely to use her voice in the courtroom, the boardroom, and the community. H ow You Can Help Us Build "Rebelle Pacs" Each Rebelle Pac we distribute contains more than just products; it contains a toolkit for transformation. We include high-quality, professional-grade items because we believe survivors deserve the very best—not just leftovers. How you can support this mission: 1. Donate to our Pac Fund: Help us purchase the essentials that go into our signature kits. 2. Share Your Story: Have you ever used a beauty ritual to get through a hard day? Tag us at # RebelleWithACause and tell us your story. 3. Advocate: Speak up against the stigma. Remind your circles that self-care is a right, not a luxury. Beauty isn’t about the mask you wear for the world. It’s about the tools you use to build your own future. At the Heart of Empowerment – Our Mission Dear supporter of Rebelle With A Cause Inc, We wish to extend our warmest thanks for your continued belief in our cause and our work. As a beacon of hope for survivors across all backgrounds and experiences, our resolute mission is steeped in resilience and fortitude. We tirelessly assert that every survivor has a right to be believed and supported throughout their healing journey. It is our mission to inspire and empower them to unearth their voice and reclaim their authenticity. Together, we can make a difference We realize that the struggle to break free from the chains of abuse can be long and daunting. Did you know that a woman will attempt to leave seven times before she makes a final decision, and at times, she may be unable to do so due to extenuating circumstances? Statistics like these underline the importance of our mission. Rest assured, we are not alone in this endeavor. Allied with other advocate organizations, we stand unified in our commitment to provide help and access to resources for those in dire need. How you can extend your support As we strive to uplift and empower, we need your compassionate support to make a significant impact. By extending help to our cause, you are directly contributing to our pursuit of creating safe environments for survivors and helping them reclaim their lives. Your assistance ensures the readiness of our support system when survivors need it the most. This is a call to action to support an endeavor very close to our hearts. Help us raise $2500 to provide 12 fourteen day Rebelle Pacs and 26 seven day Rebelle Pacs. These crucial Rebelle Pacs serve as lifelines for survivors who are in the process of extricating themselves from unsafe situations. Without this support, they might retreat back to harmful environments due to sheer lack of options. We greatly appreciate any donation you can afford. No contribution is too small. We wholeheartedly believe in the power of collective action - the collective efforts of compassionate individuals like you to effect great change.
